The Grace Golden Eagles’ Boy’s and Girl’s Varsity Basketball teams had the unique opportunity to play a home game against Arthur Christian School whose Varsity teams traveled all the way from Arthur, Illinois to face the Golden Eagles. More than the distance that Arthur Christian’s teams traveled to challenge Grace, what made the experience special was the fact that Arthur Christian’s Boy’s team is coached by Mr. Jeremy Mattheiss, the son of Grace’s very own Mr. Jon Mattheiss.

Before moving to Illinois, Mr. Jeremy Mattheiss played an active role in Grace Baptist Church’s youth group and at Grace Children’s Center. Mattheiss is also a Grace alumni, and he helped coach many of grace’s current varsity players during their Middle School years.

“Playing against my son’s team was an interesting experience. Three years ago, they beat us by eight or ten points here at Grace, so it was important to me to not let use lose again to them,” remarked Mr. Jon Mattheiss.

The Boy’s team did not let Mr. Mattheiss down, beathing Arthur Christian by sixteen points this year, and the Girl’s team also emerged victorious against Arthur Christian with a score of 40-33. Both of Grace’s Varsity teams also won against East Ridge High School whom they played before Arthur Christian. This Friday, the Golden Eagles will face off against Silverdale Academy in one of the most awaited games of the year.

“Silverdale has a more experience team this year than we do, and they are a good team. We will have to play well to win and we will need the support in the student section from our student body,” said Mattheiss.

Grace won two out of three games against Silverdale last year, and the team has been practicing hard to deliver another success this Friday. Full support from the faculty and student body is anticipated, and regardless of the outcome of the game, the Golden Eagles will play well and show good sportsmanship as they not only represent the school on the court, but also Christ.
